Building awareness and community. I also want to Help friends and family better understand my thoughts and emotions behind this. Myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) is a movement disorder causing involuntary muscle jerking or twitching (myoclonus) usually affecting the upper body. Most M-D patients harbor autosomal dominant mutations in SGCE (ε-sarcoglycan protein), resulting from imprinting and inactivation of the maternal copy.

Background: Myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) due to a pathogenic variant of SGCE is an autosomal dominant inherited movement disorder. Apart from motor symptoms, psychiatric disorders are highly prevalent in patients with M-D. Background: Inherited myoclonus–dystonia (M-D) is a disorder that is characterized primarily by myoclonic jerks and is often accompanied by dystonia. In addition to motor features, psychiatric disease is reported in some families. Methods: To determine whether the same genetic etiology underlies both neurologic and psychiatric signs, the authors studied psychiatric symptoms in nonmanifesting Myoclonus was either isolated or associated with mild to moderate dystonia, and predominated in the neck/trunk or proximal upper limbs in most cases. We found that 22% of the patients had a spontaneous improvement in their dystonia before reaching adulthood and that hypotonia can occasionally be a presenting symptom of the disorder.

Action myoclonus is triggered or made stronger by voluntary movement or even the intention to move. It may become worse during attempts at precise, coordinated movements. Myoclonus–dystonia (M–D) is a movement disorder characterized by myoclonic jerks and dystonic movements or postures. Myoclonus is a rapid, brief contraction (‘fast lightning jerk’) of one muscle or a group of muscles.

In genetic disorders, myoclonus is often accompanied by ataxia, dystonia, or other movement disorders. Isolated myoclonic jerks can be seen in epileptic encephalopathies and familial cortical myoclonic tremor with epilepsy; for a comprehensive overview of genetic myoclonus disorders, see van der Veen et al. 22 A diagnostic approach to patients with myoclonus can be found in Zutt et al. 23 Although myoclonus and dystonia are present in myoclonus dystonia patients, optimum treatment for myoclonus dystonia differs from the treatment for myoclonus [en.wikipedia.org] Treatment of myoclonus-dystonia syndrome with tetrabenazine.
